I am one ofthe "Peniel Angels" dancers and am currently in my first year of college at City Tech; I'm stuyding Business Management and Marketing.

I am a very strong believer inhaving faith; we must always have faith in God and everything that we do in life. Matthew 17: 20 says: "because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

Noelle Holley

My name is Noelle Holley. I was born on Dewcember 11, 1992 in Brooklyn, New York. I am a very ambitious and determined eighteen year old female. I'm presently into my second and final year at Kingsborough Community Coeege with a major in Early Childhood Education. I will be receiving my Associate's Degree in June 2012. My future career goals is to become a Kindergarten or First grade teacher. At this point in my education career, my most favority class is student teaching, and I enjoy every minute of it. For my post-KCC education, my plan is to attend either Brooklyn College, New Platz - Plattsburgh or Oneonta College to receive a Bachelor's Degree, following with a Master's degree, of course I want to continue to work hard so that I can be a positive model for young children to look up to. My hard and diligent work in my first year was so successful that my school highly recommended me to apply for a scholarship.

I am a member of Salem Missionary Baptist church. Salem is the only church thast I have ever attended. There are several young adult ministries in my church, but only two in which I'm actively a part of: Growing in Faith Together (GIFT) and the Praise Dance Ministry. Growing in Faith Together (GIFT) is a young adult ministry. Each month we have meetings and share the things about the blessings of God. We also grow deeper in faith as we discuss different Bible topics. Participing in these ministries with my peers is a blessing in itself. Each time that I go, I learn something new. I always leave with something to think about. I believe that these meetings help me get to know myself better. I grow deeper and deeper in faith as I learn new things.

In the Praise Dance Ministry, children and young adults come together to dance for the Lord. We are blessed to perform our dances every fifth Sunday of the month during our regular worship service. We have also been invted to perform at other churches. I enjoy praising the Lord through dance. In this ministry, I learned that it is okay to show emotion through dance. I also learned that it is okay to express your love for the Lord throuigh dance. I feel that I can express myself more when I dance.

In order to stay an ambitious and determined person, I keep myself surrounded by people who motivate me andpeople who are going somewhere in life. I have my family: mother, father, sister and brother who will always be there for me. I also have many friends and church family members who I can talk to about anything; and they are willing to help me if I need it. If that doesn't work, I know that I can always go to God in prayer and ask him for guidance. I believe that the top three things in life are God, family and education. I don't think a person can be very successful without all three. I have been though a lot so far in my life and I know that as long as I continue living, I will alway have God on my side.

When I am older, I want to be the person that children (young and old) can look up to. I am a person that loves children. I want them to know that they can do anything they want to do as long as they put work into it. They have to put their best foot forward and not listen to the negativity that may be around them. All they have to do is trust in God and know that everything is going to be okay. It's like Philippians 4:13 says, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me."

God always comes first in my life. Then everything else follows. Without Him, I don't know where IU would be. Everyday at some part of the day, I just have to stop and thank the Lord for everything that He has done. I don't know what God has in store for me but I do know that as long as I keep doing what I'm supposed to do I will get there. Faith is the answer. Faith is the key to all things. My faith in God has brought me a very long way. I know that my faith in God will help me to become a better person and be the person that God wants me to be.

She cares a lot about others and feeds the homeless people when she can. She is indeed a smart and caring young lady and one day she will help to make a big difference in the lives of others. Brother Gerald Stephens

John Hus Moravian Church, Reverend Dr. Michael E. Johnson, Pastor

Brother Gerald Stephens is the epitome of faithfulness to God and a tremendous example to the other men of our congregation. Currenlty serving as the chairman of the Board of Trustees, Brother Stephens approaches his responsibility with the type of commitment that provides serious motivation for the pastor as he takes volunteerism to new hieghts which transcends tha which was considered the norm.

He has previously served on the Board of Trustees and is a faithful member of the Men's Fellowship, a member of the Outreach Committee and our resident Disc Jockey. In addition, he was instrumental in the founding and organizing of the John Hus Moravian Church School which continues to be a vibrant element of our ministry at John Hus.

Of absolute importance is the fact that Brother Gerald is an upright Christian who take the Word of God seriously. His regular attendance at Bible Study and Prayer Meetings supports that assertion. Even at a point when he had a serious sight program that was never allowed to be a distorting factor for sharing in the wider vision of the church.

Brother Stephens is a team player. Our pastor has always expressed absolute confidence in him and never feels that he has to look over his shoulder. His contribution to our ministry is invaluable and deserves the highest praise even though he would be the first to discourage anything of that nature.

The award was presented to the Rev. Dr. Joe L. Parker by the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Straut, Jr.

Wayside Baptist Church was organized in 1949 under the leadership of the Rev. Theodis Hutcherson. The name 'Wayside' came out of the echoes of the poem, "The House By the Side of the Road." In 1999 it celebrated its' Golden Jubilee.

In 1961 Rev. Joe L. Parker became a member of the Church; in 1973 he was appointed Co-Pastor of the Church; in 1977, Rev. Hutcherson retired from the pastorate of the Church after serving for 28 years; on December 1 of that year, Rev. Parker was installed as the pastor of the Wayside Baptist Church.

In carrying out its Spiritual Ministry, Wayside continues to develop a strong Social Ministry that has its genesis in hte words of God that teaches us to love thy neighbor, clothe the naked, feed the hungry, and shelter the homeless. Through the years, the programs and entities that emerged are:he Wayside Association, the Wayside Education Support Program, the Wayside McDonough Residence, the Wayside Credit Union, the Wayside Manor, the Wayside Self-Help Reliance and, the Wayside Senior Service Programs: Wayside Senior Citizen Program, Wayside Home Care Services, Rosetta Gaston Senior Center, Tilden Senior Center, Van Dyke II Senior Center, Mt. Yes, it is only an indication of what can be done if we will allow ourselves to be used of the Lord. As I look to the future, I am gripped with a desire to do a greater work for The Lord. In order to achieve this, I realize that a strong discipline must take precedence over membership."

Pastor - Father Martin J. Carter, S.A.

The award was presented by the Rev. Dr. John L. Pratt, Sr.

Father Martin Carter was installed as the first African-American priest of Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in January, 1994. He is a native of High Point, North Carolina and a priest of the Society of the Atonement, Graymoor, Garrison, New York. Father Martin holds a doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Seminary, Chicago, Illinois. Father Martin's seminary studies were done at Pope John XIII National Seminary in Weston, Mass. where he earned a Master of Divinity degree. His undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree is from Chicago State University where he concentrated on psychology and counseling.

Father Martin has ministered in the Unied States, Canada, and Jamaica. He has visited Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico. He is the former Director of the Office of Black Ministry of the Diocese of Brooklyn. He has done extensive publishing in the New Catholic Encyclopedia, The Jurist, and many magazines and newspapers.

Father Martin has worked in ecumenism with the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches where he represented the point of view of African American Catholics in the preparing of the document, The Unity of the Churchand the Renewal of Human Community. He has also published in the journal of the Society of the Atonement Ecumenical Trends.

Father Martin's ministry includes youth, marriage preparation, and family counseling. Father Martin has coauthored a book Kujenga: Black Catholic Youth Leadership Conference and coedited a videotape on Kujenga. Kujenga is a process of growth and leadreship training, which includes youth and their parents.

WHY 'AFRICAN AMERICAN'came out of Father Martin's membership on the Board of Trustees of the National Black Catholic Congress of 1987. He was asked to write some reflections on why it is appropriate for American Catholices with African roots to name themselves African American Catholic. WHY 'AFRICAN AMERICAN' provides a theological, historical, sociological, psychological perspective on the importance of naming oneself.WHY 'AFRICAN AMERICAN' points out that to name oneself is the birthright of everyone, a birthright that has been stolen from African Americans. Parents wnat to pass on to their children a sense of their rooteedness. When parents take the time to givetheir children a sense of who they are, from whence they have come, and where they want to go, parents have given their children the tools to build a strong identify, a solid devotion to family, and a sturdy commitment to community. With roots firmly planted in the soil of Africa, our children can soar to the heights of greatness wherever they are.

WHY 'AFRICAN AMERICAN' is published to help adults search out their own roots, parents to pass on their rootedness to their children, pastoral ministers to provide an environment for their people to grow in sharing the journey of African American people. When we collaborate with one another in the search for rootedness, we all soar to majestic heights.

In 1984, Fahter Martin presented the paper, The Significance of the African Roots of Christianity for Caribbean People, to the Association of Caribbean Studies Conference in Fort-de-France, Martinique. This and other publications and papers, together with his prayer, reflection, and pastoral experience have given us WHY 'AFRICAN AMERICAN.' Father Martin is the police chaplain for his local precinct and is in constant dialogue and communication with neighboring clergy.

Laywoman - Minnie Mae Figueroa

The award was presented by Mrs. Vernice Lundy.

Minnie Mae Figueroa was born on June 12, 1904 in Sumpter, South Carolina to Bossie and Eva Benjamin. Born an identical twin and the youngest of four siblings. Minnie left the Southland and migrated to New York City in 1944 with her family.

Minnie received her formal education though the New York school system where she attended P.Sp 81 Elementary School, P.S. 81 J.H.S. and the Strubenmuller Textile H.S.

As a young girl of nine, Minnie grew to love the things of God. She soon became a member of the Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Faith Church at 400 Lenox Avenue. There is where her little life began to take its form. This church became the first black church in the 1940's to broadcast on the radio and Minnie at age seventeen became one of the radio announcers of the acclaimed church. Here is where she met her 'Romeo' and true love of her life, the handsome young gallant preachers son, 'Ronald', at the ago of sixteen. Soon, after a few years, Ronald and Minnie married, and to this unino of forty-eight years three children were born. God getting the glory out of their lives, Ronald too followed in the footsteps of his father and became not just the preachers son, but the preacher.

Rev. Dr. Ronald Figueroa and Mother Minnie Figueroa are the proud parents of three offspring that are all preachers. Bishop Eric R. Figueroa, Sr., their pastor, and two daughters, Evangelist Ingrid Figueroa and Evangelist Tereen Figueroa, who all serve in the same ministry of the New Life Tabernacle Church where Minnie is the church mother.

Minnie worked various jobs until she and her twin sister Pearl joined their eldest sister Annie Mae in the garment workers district at 'TOPS Inc.' manufacturers of menswear. After many years and mastering her trade Minnie excelled to greater things where she joined the NYC Traffic Enforcement where she worked faithfully (with her twin sister, who always shared the same employment) and after twenty-six years of service retired as an Investigator of Internal Affairs.

Minnie is exemplary of the virtuous woman whose price is far above rubies. She has so many talents in addition to being a strong woman; she is a preachers wife, she's the preachers mother, which often times makes her the preacher. Minnie is an annointed cook and an entrepeneur. Minnie has been blessed to have a phenomenal pie business, Mother Minnie's Heaven Bound Sweet Potato Pies. There's healin' in them pies! Her God given talent has caused her to be an outstanding blessing to her church, where she has worked diligently for eighteen years.

Having a spitit of excellence, Minnie has always looked for ways to better herself. At the age of sixty, Minnie went back to school. She is currently a student ofthe Community Bible Institute where she has received numerous awards, accommodations and recognition as the most outstanding student for the year 1999. Minnie's life is a continual legacy to women everywhere. She often says, "Hold on to your dream, cause I'm a witness that God will bring it to pass." Minnie also served faithfully as a member of the Institutional Church of God in Christ where she was also a radio announcer for the famed Sunday might broadcaster, WWRL.

Today is a day to look at her accomplishments in adoration. We honor and salute the God woman that she is. He blessed the life of this great woman whose life has been an asset to all she touches. Bless God for her, to God be the glory, greater things He has done. The lady, our mother, our advisor, our example our friend, Minnie Mae Figueroa.

Our Campaign Chairman was Gordon W. Innes.

Greetings from Rev. V. Simpson Turner, D.D., Executive Secretary

this year marks the 135th Anniversary of the founding of the Broolkyn Division of the Protestant Council. During the long history of the work of the churches in this, "The Borough of Churches," there have been many significant changes to meet the needs of the times.

In 1829, the united work of the churches was under the name of the City Mission Society. The missionary effort of the churches flourished until it was necessary to incorporate the organization in 1865. Later, in 1920, as the borough grew and the churches increased in numbers, it was necessary to organizae the Federation of Churches. Finally, when Brooklyn became a more integral part of New York City, the Board voted that the Brooklyn churches would become a part of The Protesant Council of the City of New York, in the middles 1940s.

Subsequently, the Brookln Division has been engaged in developing and executing programs that meet the needs of changing neighborhoods. Also, many of these programs are open to the people in the various communities on a non-sectarian basis.

The Council is interested in building a better Brooklyn for all the people who reside and work in this great borough.

We wish to express our sincere thanks on our 135th Anniversary to the churches, community organizations, business community, fraternal groups, Council affiliates, the honored guest and his associates and personal friends of The Council for their untiring efforts and support of the Seventh Annual Testimonial Dinner.

This message would be incomplete if we did not extend our appreciation to the members of our staff and friends who sacrificed their personal time and energy to assist us in making this Annual Dinner a success.

May I, on behalf of our Board of Directors, express our gratitude to you for joining us on this auspicious occasion.

Sixth Testimonial Dinner

The sixth testimonial dinner was held on Thursday, November 14, 1963 at the Hotel St. George.

Welcome from Kostas Vellios, Journal Chairman

On behalf of the Brooklyn Division of the Protestant Council I wish to extend greetings to our guests and the many friends who by their presence here tonight have made this affair a success.

We are very proud to welcome our honored guest, Col. Frederick I. Kopff, Jr., who is one of Brooklyn's most prominent community leaders and well-known for his many endeavors and accomplishments in communal, civic, and religious activities.

I particularly wish to thank the members of my committee who have not only contributed their names but also gave so generously of their time and effort. It is to them that the credit of this successful Journal belongs.

In conclusion, I am very grateful to our many advertisers and friends for their contributions. It should be the privilege of all of us to patronize all those listed therein in appreciation for their interest and concern.

Guest of Honor Col. Frederick L. Kopff, Jr.

It is altogether fitting that our sixth annual testimonial dinner be a tribute to Col. Frederick L.Kopff, Jr., a gifted attorney and respected community leader who has worked tirelessly on behalf of our programs for many years.

Mr. Kopff, who serves as a director of both the Brooklyn Division and the city Protestant Council, was general chairman from 1957 to 1962 of the Division's annual fund drive. In that post he provided inspirational and imaginative leadership, helping the division to attain tits worthy goals of providing excellent education and religious program for both your and old in our community.

A native of Brooklyn, Mr. Kopff earned degrees at Princeton University and the New York University School of Law, and currently holds membership in a number of professional organizatoins, including the Brooklyn Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the New York State Title Association. He is also a founder and the incumbent of the Protestant Lawyers Association of Brooklyn.

The scope of Mr. Kopff's communal activities is reflected in his membership in a host of worthy organizations in Brooklyn and throughout the Metropolitan area. He is president of the Fathers Association of St. Paul's School, Garden City, New York, as well as the president of their Building Fund Committee, a director of theNational Conference of Christians and Jews and a member of St. Stephey's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Brooklyn, New York.

His deep concern for the advancement of education programs for our young people is illustrated by his membership since 1958, of the Mayor's Committee on Released Time Schools for Protestants, Catholics and Jews. Mr. Kopff numbers among his fraternal affiliations the Midwood Lodge No. 1062, F. & A.M., the Aurora Grata Scottish Rite Bodies and Long Island Grotto Post No. 1115 of the American Legion, of which he is a past commander. He also belongs to the Princeton Club of New York and the Brooklyn Club.

During World War II, Mr. Kopff served our country with distinction in a theater of operation which has become almost legendary. For several years he was combat intelligence officer and finally Commanding Officer of the 187th Field Artillery, a unit which fought the battle of Europe from D-Day to V-E Day. He earned a number of citations for valor, among them the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Invasion Arrowhead (Normandy) and the illustrious Croix de Guerre with Gold Starhead (Normandy)

The vigor and enthusiasm Fred Kopff has brought to his work on behalf of the Brooklyn Division truly merit the highest praise, and it is with profound gratitude that we salute him on the occasion of our sixth annual testimonial dinner.

In paynig tribute to Mr. Kopff, we must not overlook the efforts of another ardent supporter of the Brooklyn Division -- his father, who is former City Court Justice and now is special Court Referee.

Guest Speaker Raymond C. Ellis

The Campaign Chariman was Ray W. Kline.

The Dinner Chairman was Howard Kessler.

Message of the President, Rev. Harry H. Kruener:

I believe it was Marilyn Monroe who made the astute observation a few months ago before her death that "Hollywood is a city that has no member; everybody took all they could and then left." She rightly felt there was something wrong with a place that had no traditions, no gratitude to the past, no recognition of what others have done for us.

Our Testimonial dinner is such an act of grateful recognition. We come together on this happy occasion to witness a common tradition, uniting us as Protestants in our city, a tradition stretching back over more than a century from the old days of the Brooklyn Church and Mission Federation to our present Division of the Protestant Council of the City of New York.

We also come together to extend thanks to an outstanding layman who, usually behind the scenes, has done more than his share to keep our Protestant witness in Brooklyn. Colonel Kopff is a worthy recipient of the recognition this year. I speak from personal experience, he has bee ny right hand man, as hte has been for many of my predecessors.

Not least of all, we come together to lend financial support to the many enterprises of our Council, maintained in a non-sectarian manner, for the moral upbuilding of our community.

Let us then rejoice this evening in our fellowship together, remember that the past has indeed been good to us and the future is bright iwth the promises of God.

Message of the Executive Secretary, Rev. Dr. V. Simpson Turner:

The Brooklyn Division of the Protestant Council takes great pride in the 145th Anniversary of its history in the "Borough of Churches."

Perhaps no other year has brought so many significant changes in the life of The Council. There has been a "new look" in personnel, expansion programs, changing church and community attitudes and inter-neighborhood communications.

The Brooklyn Division traces its origin back to 1829, when it was known as the Brooklyn City Mission Society. Then, as now, Brooklyn is one of the great mission fields of the world. Thus, it is through the joint efforts of the churches taht we are attempting to lift the moral, social, economic and spiritual climate of our larger community in various ways.

We wish to express our sincere thanks to the Churches, community organizations, business community, fraternal groups, Council affiliates, the honored guest and his associates and personal friends of The Council for their untiring efforts and support of the Sixth Annual Testimonial Dinner.

This message would be incomplete if we did not extend our appreciation to the members of our staff and friends who sacrificed their personal time and energy to assist us in making this Annual Dinner a success.

May I, on behalf of our Board of Directors, express our gratitude to you for joining us on this auspicious occasion.

Guest Speaker Hon. Kenneth B. Keating, U.S. Senator of New York

Greetings from Rev. John Lewis Zacker, President

Juvenile delinquency! We grapple with the problem. We shall not let go until some solution is in sight. Religious education, which includes youth centers, Released Time and Daily Vacation Bible Schools are a "must" if youth is to be saved. It is a major function of our program. To the neglected and underprivileged children we supply camp vacations. We are represented in the courts when unfortunates are dependent on counseling and protection. Over 42 hospitals, prisons and other institutions benefit by our chaplaincy service, and the recently inaugurated Blood Bank has elicited high commendation. Other ramifications of the Protestant Council are too numerous and far reaching to mention in this brief space. More than 500 churches of our area use our offices as a clearing house. In Protestant expression and function, we represent a form of Protestant unity in action.

The Fourth Annual Testimonial Dinner enables its guests to share a partnership in our moral, spiritual and civic enterprise and challenge.

Richard B. Loomis, the recipient of our annual award, is unanimously cited for outstanding leadership because of a long record of service to the community. In honoring him, we honor ourselves. With modesty, he displayed the virtues which make for excellent citizenship and religious efficacy.

Of course, we are fortunate to have Senator Kenneth B. Keating as the dinner speaker. Regardless of political partisanship, the Senator stands out as a forthright, able and fearless, in our arena of statesmanship. He always expresses convictions pertinent to our day.

Our Board of Directors, its Executive Secretary, and Executive Committee greet you with grateful hearts. Frederick L. Kopff, Jr., our General Campaign Chairman, deserves special mention and your constructive cooperation. The dynamic Raymond C. Ellis and Howard Kessler, Co-Chairmen of this Dinner, and Andrew S. Roscoe, Chairman of our Finance Committee, are examples of fine Christian leadership. If only we were permitted to herein inscribe the long list of additional names of those who have upheld our hands in high venture and accompishment. Our hand of fellowship is stretched to the representatives of other religious communions. In the face of Communistic onslaught we stand together as a bulwark against atheistic materialism. May God's abundant blessings be vouchsafed to you all.

Greetings from Rev. Richard L. Francis, Executive Secretary

For one hundred and thirty-two years interdenominational work has been done by the Brooklyn Division of the Protestant Council or its predecessors, for the Brooklyn Division of the Protestant Council is the successor to the Brooklyn Church and Mission Federation which was formed when the Brooklyn City Mission Society and the Brooklyn Federation of Churches merged. Since 1829 these organizations have been serving the borough's Protestant churches and closely allied churches of the Anglican and Orthodox tradition. In 1946. when the Brooklyn Division of the Protestant Council formally joined the Protestant Council of the City of New York, we became part of a city-wide witness for Protestantism. Through all of these years we have tried to be the local expression of the World Council of Churches, the National Council of Churches and the State Council of Churches, as we serve approximately five hundred congregations.

The Brooklyn Council of Churches has a twofold task, to serve the churches of our borough at the grass root level and to give them a united voice in spite of their differing religious heritage, but testifying to the fact that they believe in unity without necessarily having uniformity. The Council participates in all public functions where the Protestant church must be represented, and at the same time serves each individual church through its Departments of Evangelism and Christian Social Relations, through such organizations as the United Church Women and the Federation of Protestant Men, and serves our institutions through the Chaplaincy Department. The purpose of our Council is to give the churches strength and leadership by first deepening the spiritual life of each person and having a vision to express their Christian convictions in action that will be felt in the community and across the world. To serve at its best the Council must have the total resources of all denominations.

I wish, therefore, to express my deep appreciation to the pastors and churches that have been so faithful and continuous in the contributions to our activities in the past. We are looking forward to your support in 1962 and solicit your prayers as well as your contributions of time and service for a stronger Protestant voice in Brooklyn

The attendance this evening proves that we are all in accord to render praises to him. It is also a further indication of your wholehearted support of the program of the Brooklyn Division of the Protestant Council "to the glory of God and service to man."

We wish to express our gratitude and appreciation to our chairmen, committee members, patrons, sponsors, boosters and volunteers for their untiring effort which has crowned this auspicious occasion with great success.

Welcome statement of the Journal Chairman -

It is with humility that we welcome you to this testimonial dinner in honor of a distinguished humanitarian -- Louis Charles Wills.

In these crucial days of great technological advancement, which challenge our very existence, we might well recall the immortal words of Reverend S. Baring-Gould:

"Like a mighty army move the church of God. Brothers, we are treacing where the saints have trod; We are not divided -- all one body we, One in hope and doctrine -- one in charity."

We express our gratitude and appreciation to our volunteers, patrons, boosters, sponsors, chairmen and committee members for that unsparing effort which has crowned this occasion with great success.
